Kilometer 28 882: the private life of motorbikes

The fertile land of the Mekong Delta. Every morning hundreds of individuals crawl out from their burrows. Slowly, but with great determination, they head for places of their daily encounters. Some of them tiny, two-wheeled, others powerful, gladly using their engine whirrs to intimidate the neighbourhood. All are driven by the will to fight. The vehicle that lives through the first weeks in the urban jungle has the potential to cope in the future. Only the fit will survive.

Single males spend all their time on exposing their horns. This is how they attempt to lure their partners. The sound carries far, but it’s hard to stand out from the crowd – every male motorbike, car, bus and truck acts the same. The females have a good selection of partners, if they only want to make their choice! Often, however, they are not interested, because towards the end of spring, aggressive males swarm around the females, not rarely leading to jostling and brawling. They approach as close as possible to present their ornamental coloration.

In these circumstances the truck males have a significant advantage. Due to their sturdy underbody, they are able to cope with most of the obstacles they face on the road. Nonetheless, the motorbike males do not give up, gracefully using their main strengths: flexibility and meandering. The prime pride of buses is their unique timbre, which they gladly show off to females by playing their horns forte and staccato.

They all share one thing: they know that they are under full protection during the mating season, so as long as they honk and beep, they remain safe.

For a bit of balance and to rest our ears – pictures of the stunning Halong Bay
There’s no better fun than to grab a living creature by the tail and have a photo shoot!

From Halong we transport ourselves to the rice paddies of Ninh Binh

Oh-so-romantisch!
