Kilometer 4793: on the secret of Georgian construction and surprise lemonade

You’d think it’s a small country! The climate in Georgia changes every 200 km in each direction.

From the subtropical Batumi, where it’s hard to determine whether you are still wet or wet again after just showering and where you’ll show the way out of your tent to the little scorpions, through the cold and windy Kazbegi, where you need to initiate all your merino thermal underwear, to the dry and burning Kakheti along with the steppe area of David Gareja. Coming here, you need to be ready for anything.

By anything, I mean also bricks potentially falling on your head. Half of Tbilisi’s buildings are only standing because the climbing ivy holds them together. The architectural, plumbing and electric solutions are at least as innovative as the Brazilian favelas.

By anything, I mean lemonade. Someone must have spent a great deal of time and energy to come up with this. Lemonade is made of lemons – well, duh! Pears and grapes – very well. Tarragon – peculiar, original taste, but I’ve heard about it before. Lemonade is chocolate and vanilla flavoured. Seriously. Someone thought that it would be a good idea to manufacture a drink that tastes like fizzy, melted ice-cream. Chapeau bas.

By anything, I mean prices, unfortunately. Salaries are small, the average is circa 300$. Pensions are at starvation-level, around 80$. How can a litre of milk cost 2$ in a country where a cow is the pillar of agriculture?! The families which manage to feed all their kids and help out the elderly parents deserve all the accolades.
